Today, there are legions of sneaker brands, and each has their own specific personality. However, certain brands have better reputations than others. This rings especially true for the brand Asics, which we’re sure you’ve heard of before. As one of the most internationally appreciated sports equipment manufacturers, it’s no question why numerous sports clubs, both amateur and professional, choose this brand to supply their equipment, clothing, and shoes.
Originally from Japan, Asics was created in 1949 by Kihachiro Onitsuka, a young shoemaker who wanted to develop basketball shoes. Two years later, the first success will be at the rendezvous, the pair of sneakers Onitsuka Tiger will sell several thousand copies in a few months. The name Asics comes from the contraction of the Latin expression, Anima Sana In Corpore Sano, which literally means a healthy mind in a healthy body.
Building on this first success, the brand continued its efforts and focused on improving the existing one. That's why the Onitsuka Tiger shoe has been extensively retouched to be considered perfect. This latest version will be worn by Japan's women's volleyball team at the Tokyo Olympics in 1964.
Then, it is the 70's that will really come to mark the history of the brand. During this decade, Asics will make the decision to interfere a little more in the sports world by forming partnership contracts with many sportsmen very popular at the time. This will be the case, for example, with Derek Clayton, the first marathon runner in history to drop below two hours and ten minutes at the Fukuoka marathon.
